Grand Coulee Dam
A trip to one of the great engineering wonders of the world - September, 2003
The trip to the Grand Coulee Dam area was as impressive as the dam itself! The laser light show on the dam at night was worth the stay-over. Check out the Bureau of Reclamation Power Program site and the University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections Grand Coulee Dam Collection site for more info on the dam.
An innocent view from the top, the dam looks like a long bridge with arches across a lake.
From the side, however, you see the towering height and massive expanse of the dam. The area below the bridge arches covers 11 acres!

The huge power generators in Power Plant 3 -- any one of them is capable of providing sufficient power for all of Seattle.
The spillway from the Power Plant 3 level. To get a perspective on the size of the dam, each of the water drainage holes in the dam is big enough to drive a full-sized car through.
